Paul Finebaum has never shied away from saying whatever’s on his mind and his thoughts on Jimbo Fisher aren’t being kept a secret.
During a conversation with ESPN’s Matt Barrie on Monday, Finebaum let loose on Fisher and how the success in his past may actually be misleading to what he’s providing Texas A&M.
“Somebody texted me during that (Texas A&M vs Mississippi State) game and with one of those riddles: ‘What is the difference between Jimbo Fisher and Gus Malzahn? The answer is Jameis Winston,” Finebaum said. “Take Jameis Winston out of this guy’s arsenal, and he may not be a head coach right now.
“That’s how important Winston was. The good news for A&M, if there is any good news, is the schedule gets easy and manageable. But so what? Saturday night will be the third loss of the season. You can manufacture 8-4 or 9-3. I don’t know where they are going to end up. But that’s now what Texas A&M is paying for.”
Many had Saturday’s game circled on their calendars months in advance following the public dispute between Fisher and Nick Saban who traded back and forth over the summer regarding NIL. Following the disappointing start from the Aggies, Finebaum believes the game has lost its luster.
“We’re knocking on the door of Oct. 8. From the end of May until a few weeks ago, that was a date even non-college football fans knew. That was the battle between Saban and Jimbo. Essentially now, this is a cupcake game for Alabama. This is not to be taken seriously.”
Last season Fisher became the first former Saban assistant to defeat the Crimson Tide’s head coach, but one year later many, including Finebaum, think that the program hasn’t seized the momentum from last year’s upset.
“I know he beat Alabama last year and then completely threw it away,” Finebaum said. “Completely let that one get away.”
