Nick Saban breaks down drawbacks, advantages of transfer portal

Nick Saban gave his opinion on how the NCAA transfer portal has impacted college football on ESPN’s Championship Drive Monday.

Saban discussed the transfer portal’s impact on rebuilding a team.

“In this day and age of football, we’re going to see more and more because you can get well in the transfer portal as TCU did,” Saban said. “You can change your entire team relative to the guys that you get in the portal…We all try to do a great job of recruiting and get young players, but when you take players out of the portal, you’re getting older and more seasoned guys who may be more ready to contribute to the team. If you can get those guys to buy into the culture on your team, then you got a chance to really be successful. This is going to happen more and more.”

Saban also said he feels the transfer portal will make it hard to have continued success.

“I think it’s going to be more difficult to sustain success at a high level because you’re going to lose some of your players. But then, on the other side of it, I think rebuilding programs is going to happen more often because of the transfer portal.”
