Alabama has added a defensive coordinator to its coaching staff.
In a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Crimson Tide have added Southern Miss defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong to the team’s on-field coaching staff. It is currently unclear what role Armstrong will serve on Nick Saban’s staff, but the news comes on the same day longtime defensive coordinator Pete Golding left for Ole Miss.
Sources: Southern Miss defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong is expected to be added to the on-field coaching staff at Alabama. He’s a former QC at Georgia and his Southern Miss defense finished Top 5 nationally this year in both sacks and fourth-down conversion defense.

Armstrong began his coaching career as a defensive line coach at West Georgia (Div. II) in 2016 and would later serve as a defensive graduate assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette from 2017-18. He would then move on to Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia in 2019 where he was the defensive quality control coach.
After another stint with the Rajun Cajuns, Armstrong found himself at Southern Miss serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. In 2022 he helped the Golden Eagles rank Top 10 in the country in several defensive categories including first downs allowed (N0. 2), fumbles recovered (No.4), red zone defense (No. 6) and defensive touchdowns (No. 7).
Armstong also earned his bachelor’s degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., in 2014.
