Another name has been tossed into the ring for Alabama’s open defensive coordinator position.
According to FootballScoop SEC veteran, Kevin Steele has emerged as a legitimate candidate to become the Crimson Tide’s new defensive coordinator. The report shared that Steele has entered contention within the past 72 hours following Alabama analyst Todd Grantham’s departure to the NFL and Steele has already directly spoken to Nick Saban.
Steele has deep coaching ties within the SEC including Alabama as he has had multiple stints on Saban’s staff ranging from off-field roles to becoming the team’s linebackers coach in 2014. He is currently serving as the defensive coordinator for Mario Cristobal’s staff at Miami.
As previously mentioned, Steele has a tremendous amount of experience coaching in the SEC as he has coached for programs such as LSU, Auburn and Tennessee.
Additionally, it was stated in the report that former Volunteer’s head coach and Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt may no longer be a top candidate for the Crimson Tide. It was highlighted that the ongoing NCAA probe into Pruitt’s time at Tennessee has “made it impossible to hire him” as of right now according to FootballScoop.
It was also stated that there is one other unnamed candidate being considered at this point along with Steele.
