Alabama football has a competition at quarterback that will have all eyes on it.

Some have their poker chips stacked toward Ty Simpson as the starter, but a former National Football League edge rusher believes Jalen Milroe is special. On Tuesday, Corey Miller joined The Bama Standard to discuss the coaching hires of Kevin Steele and Tommy Rees to the Crimson Tide. Miller, the father of former Alabama linebacker Christian Miller, said Milroe will be ‘the second coming of Jalen Hurts’ for Alabama’s offense. He played nine seasons (1991-99) in the NFL with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.

“I think Jalen Milroe will benefit the most from Tommy Rees,” Miller said. “He now will have a system that works for him. That system of spreading the ball out to some frisbee-catching dogs would not have worked for him. He needs to work on his passing game, but with his ability to run the football and the running backs and tight ends, they have … I think he becomes the starter. People did not like it, but I was impressed with him against Texas A&M. When he had to play, I was okay with that. It was a tough situation to come into. I think Milroe is that dude. You know what we are seeing with Jalen Hurts for the Eagles right now. He has taken that team to the Super Bowl and has changed the whole dynamics of the team. I think Coach Saban is going, ‘I had a guy like that and he won a lot of games for me. I had to make a decision in the heat of the moment, which was the right decision, to go with Tua [Tagovailoa], but I brought him [Hurts] in the SEC Championship where he had to win the game. I have that guy sitting here in Jalen Milroe, and I need to give him an opportunity with a coach that understands him.’ I think Tommy Rees is going to get the best out of him. I believe he is that guru, and Milroe will be the starter. I think he is going to put up some crazy numbers.”

Milroe earned a 24-20 victory in his first career start against Texas A&M, totaling three touchdowns.

He finished last season with six total scores (one rushing touchdown) and 562 total yards. Milroe enters his third season in the spring as a former four-star in the 2021 recruiting class. We will see if he holds off Simpson for the starting job.
