It goes without saying that joining Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama adds one heck of an attention grabber to someone’s resume and Tommy Rees was certainly aware before accepting the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator position.
But even though he was departing the Fighting Irish family, the university’s men’s basketball coach Mike Brey praised Rees for the move.
Brey mentioned in one of the recent press conferences that he ran into Rees and likened his move to Alabama to his own decision to join Mike Krzyzewski at Duke as an assistant coach in 1987.
“The move I made to Durham set me up for the rest of my career,” Brey recalled telling Rees on his move to Tuscaloosa.
Brey coached at Duke until 1995 where he would eventually become the head coach at Deleware and then shortly after in the year 2000 he would join Notre Dame. Brey is entering his final season in command of the Fighting Irish as he will leave the program at the conclusion of the year.
Rees was officially named the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator on Feb. 13 where he shared his excitement in a statement.
“I have the utmost respect for what Coach Saban has built at Alabama and the tradition of his program,” Rees said in a press release. “I’m excited to have this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to getting in the meeting room and on the practice field with this team.”
Rees will now work with the most talent he’s ever had at his disposal and will look to take advantage of his opportunity in Tuscaloosa to further his career in coaching.
