A.J. McCarron sounds off on XFL’s “bad look” playoff model

AJ MCCARRON

St. Louis Battlehawks quarterback A.J. McCarron voiced his displeasure on Sunday about the XFL playoff format.

McCarron replied to a tweet from the Battlehawks Twitter account saying that it was a bad look for the league to take the top two teams from each division for the playoffs instead of selecting the four best teams.

Despite their 53-28 win over the Orlando Guardians on Saturday, the St. Louis Battlehawks will not be going to the 2023 XFL playoffs. The Battlehawks finished the year with a 7-3 record which tied them with the Seattle Sea Dragons for second place in the XFL North division, but the Sea Dragons will be the team to represent the North due to them holding a fifth tiebreaker over Seattle.

Both teams were tied in the following categories: Head-to-head matchups, best win-loss percentage in division games, the strength of victory in all games, and best-combined ranking among division teams in points scored and points allowed. Where Seattle pulled ahead was in the best-combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.

The Sea Dragons scored 243 points and gave up 173 which ranked them fourth and first, compared to the 249 points scored and 202 given up by the Battlehawks. When the two teams faced off this season they split the games, St. Louis winning the first game 20-18 and Seattle winning the second game 30-12.
