Nick Saban ‘not rushing’ Alabama’s quarterback competition, compares it to baking a cake

Reporters got a few gems from Nick Saban at SEC Media Days, but his best analogy was a dessert in describing Alabama’s quarterback competition for the upcoming fall.

He described the Crimson Tide’s race at quarterback as baking a cake.

People do not like their desserts rushed and Saban is the same about his signal-caller. No has separated in the battle between Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, and Tyler Buchner (transfer from Notre Dame), but Saban said all three are getting better.

He also wants the players around the quarterback to play well. Milroe, a redshirt sophomore, saw action in marquee moments against Arkansas and Texas A&M in 2022. He made some plays, but the native Texan also suffered mistakes. Milroe has worked all summer to improve his passing, and Tide fans hope he has it in order. Simpson, a redshirt freshman, did not play much last season. He tossed an interception in the spring game, but he also had several perfect balls that wide receivers dropped. The former five-star has trained this summer with QB Country to become a complete quarterback. Buchner played in 13 games at Notre Dame, including a 45-38 victory over South Carolina in a bowl game. He followed Tommy Rees to Alabama in hopes to win the starting job. Buchner has potential, but he is in a different offense and culture. He has a learning curve to master in the SEC.

No one likes an undone cake. Alabama fans do not want a quarterback that’s not a finished product.

Fall camp is coming soon, and a signal-caller needs to separate.
