Alabama safety Devonta Smith dealing with an injury ahead of season opener

Alabama football has a competition going at both safety positions.

After losing Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams to the National Football League, the Crimson Tide looks to solidify its final aspect of defense. It has several players in the safety position, but it could be without a guy for Saturday’s matchup versus Middle Tennessee State at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Devonta Smith, a former four-star, turned in successful practices in fall camp, but Nick Saban updated an injury Monday on the junior. Smith, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, came in the school’s 2021 signing class.

“Smitty [Devonta Smith] has been out with a foot for a while,” Saban said. “We think he would be in the mix if healthy.”

No one knows when Smith suffered the injury, but it is a tough break for someone surging in fall practice.

Alabama has Caleb Downs, Jaylen Key, Malachi Moore, and Kristian Story competing as safeties.
