Jalen Hurts certainly has a talent for intellectual and viral press conferences just like his former college head coach Nick Saban.
On Thursday, Hurts provided the latest in a long series of quotable moments when speaking with the media about the selfless brand of football he intends to play. If the team needs to run the ball in order to win then that’s what Hurts intends to do.

He also discussed “the standard” which is a phrase popularized by Saban at Alabama which he instills in his players to uphold no matter what.

“What I’m telling you is it’s not about me; it’s about us,” Hurts said. “So if they are doing something there for me, we got 250 yards of rushing to do that. There are multiple ways to win. The thing I want to make clear is, when did winning not become the main thing? I always say, ‘keep the main thing the main thing where winning is the only thing that truly matters.’
“Obviously you have important things, priorities. You have 1A and 1B. 1A is winning. 1B is playing to the standard. Now you can win and not play to the standard and you’re still unfulfilled. You can play to the standard and not win and you’re still unfulfilled. So what matters?”
“The standard is something that’s internal. It’s something that is undefined by anyone else but myself and it rises every day.”
Since leading the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl last season, Hurts and the offense have gotten off to a bit of a rocky start through two weeks.
Despite being behind its 2022 pace, the Eagles’ 2-0 record is clearly all that matters to Hurts as it’s the lone stat he will work hardest to uphold.
