Former Alabama DB works out for an NFL team

Could DeMeco Ryans add another University of Alabama alum to the Houston Texans’ defense?

Anthony Averett, a former Crimson Tide cornerback, worked out for the Texans. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the news Friday as Houston looks to bolster its defense. Averett, a New Jersey native, played for Nick Saban from 2013 to 2017 with the Crimson Tide. The former three-star was a two-time College Football Playoff National Champion in 2015 and 2017.

Averett grew into being a lockdown defender in 2016.

He recorded 48 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, eight pass breakups (team-high), and two forced fumbles.

Averett was one of the best defenses of the Saban era and the best group in college football in the 2016 season. He helped the Tide achieve a Southeastern Conference Championship and a victory over Washington in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (CFP Semifinal matchup). Averett collected 48 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, eight pass breakups, and an interception in 2017. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. After four seasons in Baltimore, Averett spent one year (2022) with the Las Vegas Raiders and made the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad before getting released.

He has been a productive player since college. Hopefully, Averett lands with the Texans or any NFL team soon.

Houston has Will Anderson, Christian Harris, and Henry To’oto’o as former Tide players on defense.
