Alabama football wrapped up its second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning, and Kalen DeBoer talked about returner options for the Tide following the scrimmage.
DeBoer highlighted four possible candidates, including two freshmen, who have caught the eyes of the special teams department throughout fall camp.
“Yeah, I think there’s a couple of different ways you look at it, right?” DeBoer said. “You go with the veterans, being around Germie Bernard as a returner, he’s done both and you’re comfortable with him catching the ball. You are comfortable with him making good decisions, especially when the ball is on a punt and the punt coverage team is flying down the field. He’s gonna make those good decisions…We’ve got (Jaylen) Mbakwe back there as a young guy, one of those young guys I guess I would refer to. He’s been really consistent. Ryan can do some things back there. We trust him catching the ball. You know, K-Law could be back there with the explosives he has, especially I think maybe in the kick return but also in the punt return.”
The competition at the position is set to continue to go on.
“There’s a few other guys we’ll continue to work through as we try to keep it a bigger pool, narrowing it,” DeBoer said.
Alabama will now be tasked with naming their starting returner or returners ahead of the team’s season opener at Bryant-Denny stadium on Aug 31.
