The South Carolina Gamecocks’ head football coach Shane Beamer feels the competitiveness of the SEC warrants the conference having automatic bids in the College Football Playoff.
The Gamecocks missed the College Football Playoff in 2024 after going 9-3 in the regular season with a win over the ACC Champion Clemson. Alabama and South Carolina were left right outside of the playoff with identical records.
The five highest-ranking conference champions get automatic bids into the playoff.
Beamer shared with ON3’s Pete Nakos he feels the level of competition in the SEC has to be considered when discussing the playoff structure of college football.
“The fact of the matter is, we beat the ACC Champion on their field this year and didn’t get in…I do believe this league is just different than others and there has to be some consideration,” Beamer said.
The playoff officially expanded to 12 teams in 2024. More changes are going to be discussed and further expansion is one topic reportedly on the table.
