AJ McCarron looked back at what could be described as a painful memory on the latest episode of “The Dynasty” podcast.
McCarron reflected on the factors that led to the Alabama Crimson Tide losing the Iron Bowl, not making the SEC Championship and eventually missing the National Championship game during the 2013-2014 college football season.
“That would have been a fun game for sure, and a really good matchup,” McCarron said. “I think we would have won. It would have been our third straight.”
The former Alabama quarterback said he felt the Tide had the top team in college football that season.
“I thought we were the best team in the country that year,” said McCarron. “We just had some bad luck late in the year. I mean, things, especially in that Auburn game. When somebody says, oh, they were just destined to win. Like they were destined to be in that situation because the week before we played them, I think it was Georgia on 4th and 19 and no time left, and he throws it into double coverage on a post and it, it tips right to him on the run in stride. Like, um, and then the kick 6, like, uh, and we had a lead going into late in that game. Coop dropped a touchdown pass that would’ve sealed it. We finally made a kick, and then we get called for a false start on the one kick we did make. Like, I mean, it was just— Yeah. The worst luck in that game that you could possibly have. I think it would have been a great matchup between us and Florida State. I mean, Jimbo Fisher, great coach, known him for a long time. Jameis (Winston), Kelvin (Benjamin) at receiver, would have been a great matchup against our secondary.”
Alabama football’s 2026 squad will be looking for revenge when it plays the Seminoles in Tuscaloosa this fall.
