During Monday’s practice, Alabama freshman defensive back Jireh Edwards suffered an upper-body injury, and he will undergo surgery later today, according to Yea Alabama.
Edwards was a five-star recruit with the speed and size to play multiple positions in the secondary. The Maryland native has had a solid fall camp, and he received praise from defensive coordinator Kane Wommack just a handful of days ago.
“Jireh’s one of the most instinctive playmakers I’ve ever seen coming out of high school,” Wommack said. “Very physical. He’s got phenomenal tracking of the ball. His blitz IQ and awareness is really high, and so he can create production out of that package as well. Really, for him, it’s about putting the whole thing together.”
Edwards was in the process of carving out a role for himself on Alabama’s defense prior to the injury he sustained on Monday.
It is unknown how much time Edwards will miss, but Yea Alabama said that the injury is not expected to be season-ending.
The injuries are starting to pile up for Alabama football, and the Crimson Tide’s first game is less than two weeks away.
