Alabama DC Kane Wommack says sophomore is starting at inside linebacker besides transfer

Kane Wommack revealed Luke Metz is starting at inside linebacker at the moment for the Crimson Tide alongside Caleb Woodson.

Metz is a sophomore linebacker for Alabama.

Wommack announced Metz as the starter on Wednesday.

“Metz is really our other starter right now,” Wommack said. “But those other guys have done a really good job. I’m pleased with that room. Chuck Morrell has done a fantastic job with the development in that room. You’re gonna see a number of guys in there but certainly Luke and Caleb will be the first two out.”

Metz has garnered praise throughout fall camp. Kalen DeBoer highlighted him after the Tide’s first scrimmage.

“I’m speaking more about the week of practice, probably not so much about this scrimmage, but a guy like Luke Metz being able to run sideline to sideline,” DeBoer said after the scrimmage. “He’s a guy I’d make a note of. Just like the way he plays. Every snap as a young guy, he’s getting better and better as you would expect.”

Metz will earn the first start of his career against East Carolina on Sept. 5.
