ESPN analyst and college football commentator Louis Riddick feels no player is facing more pressure than Keelon Russell ahead of the 2026 season.
Russell is set to start for the Crimson Tide as a sophomore after he beat out Austin Mack. Riddick feels Russell will carry the weight of the Alabama program this fall.
“I don’t think there is a single player who has more pressure on him in college football this year, to be quite honest with you,” Riddick said on ESPN’s First Take.” “Think about it like this. Austin Mack had a relationship with Kalen DeBoer going back to Washington and transfers to Alabama, so that was Kalen’s guy. That was Ryan Grubb’s guy. But now that Keelon has kinda like taken the reins now, and they have decided that this is the guy who is going to really inject a lot of energy, playmaking ability, improvisation into this offense here for 2026, that’s a lot. This is the most inexperienced quarterback room in the SEC, amongst the most inexperienced quarterback rooms in the SEC, in a conference that is loaded with top-notch, top-level quarterback play. And this team, with the way it struggled last year in terms of offensive line continuity and consistency, being one of the worst rushing teams in all of FBS. Ryan Williams struggling last year after having a sensational freshman year, struggling as a sophomore. Supposedly, he is supposed to be back on track this year from a receiving standpoint, a consistency standpoint, that he’s corrected all the issues that he’s had with drops.”
”Look, a lot of this, though, is all gonna come back to what can Keelon Russell do in order to infuse some really, some energy and some excitement and some optimism into this offense. Defensively, they’re gonna be fine, but I’ll tell you what, a week from now or about 10 days from now, that opening game against East Carolina that me and my colleague, Bob Wischusen, are gonna call on ABC at noon Eastern Time, that will be one of the most intriguing games of week one, simply because of Keelon Russell and this decision that Kalen DeBoer has made.”
Russell will make his first career start against East Carolina on Sept. 5.
