After defeating East Carolina 48-10, Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams evaluated his performance.
Coleman-Williams finished with five catches, 130 receiving yards and one drop, and he believes he left some things on the field Saturday.
“Whenever it’s Week 1, it’s never as good as you think,” Coleman-Williams said. “You know, going back and watching the film, it’s never as good as you think and never as bad as you think. As a whole, we felt like we left some things out there, including myself obviously, and just watching it on the sideline, not gonna blame it on Week 1, but we definitely have to focus in this upcoming week with an SEC opponent on limiting mistakes and just being extremely consistent on first and second down.”
Coleman-Williams is arguably the player being talked about the most online after Alabama’s win over ECU. He made several explosive plays, but the clips of him dropping the ball gained significant attention. He dropped a pass on Alabama’s second drive of the game. Quarterback Keelon Russell nailed Coleman-Williams in the facemask with the football, and his attempt to catch the pass with his body ended poorly ad hit the ground.
Another drop occurred on a play in which East Carolina jumped offsides, and that drop is also being talked about because it led to what potentially could have been an interception.
The reason this is going viral is because Coleman-Williams led the nation in drops last season, Russell and the Crimson Tide coaching staff are not afraid to turn to Coleman-Williams in important moments.
“That guy has a mindset of steel,” Russell said. “Nothing gets in his head. A drop is not gonna get in his head. You just got to keep pushing. You got to have a 1-0 mindset like I said. We connected on a lot more routes and a lot more plays that got us in field goal range or got us a touchdown. We just keep all the negativity or the bad things behind us and just keep playing football.”
DeBoer said Coleman-Williams made a couple of strong contested catches and added that the Crimson Tide are not going to shy away from going to Coleman-Williams
“I thought he went out there and made some contested catches too,” DeBoer said. “We’re gonna keep feeding him. He’s a relentless worker, and he’s gonna keep getting the ball. He had some catching contacts and caught some balls in traffic. So, just getting out there and he’s a captain for us. We’re not going to shy away from going to Ryan. I know that.”
Alabama might need a solid performance from Coleman-Williams next week when the Crimson Tide play at Kentucky.
