The Alabama Crimson Tide will open SEC play on the road this weekend with a matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Tide flashed major potential on both sides of the football during their 48-10 victory over ECU last Saturday. Alabama’s defense was dominant throughout the majority of the contest, but a handful of defensive mistakes ultimately led to the Pirates scoring on two separate occasions.
Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack recently took a moment to comment on the handful of mistakes that were made in the secondary last weekend, as Wommack claims the unit as a whole will look to clean things up throughout practice this week.
“Effort across the board needs to improve in certain areas when the ball is on the backside or when you’re on the backside of a play, continuing to play with fanatical effort.” Wommack said. “There were some guys that did, there were other guys that we need to make sure we get that cleaned up. And then we need to clean up a few things in the passing game, the most obvious being an explosive play out of an empty set that should not have happened. We probably had breakdowns in about four different areas there. I probably could have put them in a better situation as well, so we will get that cleaned up.”
Alabama’s biggest blemish of the afternoon came early in the second quarter, as the Tide allowed Pirates quarterback Mitch Griffis to connect with senior route runner Tyler Johnson for a 68-yard bomb which ultimately led to a touchdown. Wommack’s comments are certainly encouraging with the Tide set to begin SEC play this weekend, and the defense will face their first true test of the year on the road in Lexington.
