Nate Oats offers high praise for Alabama transfer after impressive debut

A handful of transfer players were able to make a critical impact during Alabama’s season opening 96-74 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday.

One of the most notable standouts of the night was former Kentucky forward Brandon Garrison. The senior recorded 9 points and 4 rebounds across 17 total minutes, but Garrison was nothing short of dominant on the defensive end of the floor.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats took a moment to comment on Garrison’s performance earlier today. The big man tallied an impressive 3 steals in addition to his 2 blocks throughout the matchup.

“Brandon Garrison, I thought that effort he gave us was as good as we’ve had from a big here in a long time.” Oats said. “He was out forcing turnovers, 10 deflections in one game from a big, that’s hard to do.”

Oats appears to be referring to former Alabama big man Aiden Sherrell in regard to Garrison’s efforts on Tuesday. Sherrell transferred to Indiana this offseason, and the big man’s effort was questioned on numerous occasions across the 2025 season.

Garrison’s performance on Tuesday is an excellent sight to see considering his expected role this year, and the big man’s effort was on full display across both halves of Alabama’s season opening victory earlier this week.
