Kirby Smart a national championship to his Alma mater.
Georgia defeats Alabama, 33-18, in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Smart was winless in his first four attempts before tonight’s game.
Stetson Bennett tossed two touchdown passes and Georgia totaled 140 yards rushing with a touchdown. Zamir White wore down Alabama’s run defense in the second half, totaling 84 yards rushing on 13 carries with a touchdown. James Cook had six carries for 77 yards rushing. Brock Bowers and AD Mitchell caught Bennett’s touchdown passes. The Bulldogs outscored Alabama, 20-9, in the second half of the matchup. Defensively, Georgia pressured Bryce Young and took the Heisman winner out of his rhythm.
He threw two interceptions, including a pick-six. Alabama had several opportunities in the game, but it could not cash in.
An injury to Jameson Williams in the first half hurt its offensive attack. Georgia shut the Tide off the scoreboard in the third quarter, and Bennett made winning plays for the Bulldogs. Georgia now has its first national championship since 1980.
