Alabama’s defense has a nickname this season under first-year defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. The Crimson Tide’s defense is called the ‘SWARM’ defense. Lately, that has been exactly what Alabama has been doing defensively. One player in particular has set the tone and defined the true meaning behind the SWARM defense.
Sophomore safety Bray Hubbard exemplifies the term that Wommack created upon his arrival in Tuscaloosa. Hubbard made the second start of his college career on Saturday night against LSU. The Mississippi native recorded four tackles and an interception.
Hubbard is a downhill safety that can contribute in multiple facets of the game whether he comes downhill, drops back in zone, or blitzes off the edge. He has a knack for finding the ball, and it has shown for Hubbard in the past two games. He has provided juice to an Alabama defense that had been struggling prior to him taking over for safety Keon Sabb, who is recovering from a broken foot.
On the season, Hubbard has recorded 31 tackles, two interceptions, and one pass deflection. Despite making just two starts, Hubbard is seventh on the team in tackles and tied for first on the team in interceptions.
His presence has been impactful in the past two games and will continue to be down the stretch. Hubbard has been a solid replacement for Sabb. I would look for Wommack to continue to find ways to get Hubbard in good situations, so he can continue to make big plays for the Crimson Tide.
