With Alabama losing starting quarterback Jalen Milroe to the NFL Draft, there will be an open competition at the quarterback position for the 2025 season. The three players that will be competing for the starting spot are Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell. They each possess different skillsets and have different strengths and weaknesses. Today, I will elaborate on why Russell has a legitimate chance to be Alabama’s starter in year 1 in Tuscaloosa.
First off, Russell fits the bill for what Kalen DeBoer is looking for. Russell is a quarterback that can effectively distribute the football, make sound decisions, and be a leader. In the past, DeBoer has gotten similar traits out of Michael Penix Jr. during his time at Washington. Penix Jr. was able to lead DeBoer and the Washington offense to new heights. He was an integral reason for why the Huskies reached the College Football Playoff national title game in 2024.
Interestingly enough, Russell has drawn comparisons to Penix Jr. The two have similar skillsets and possess similar traits. If Russell can amount to Penix Jr.’s level of play, he will be in great shape to take the reigns as QB1.
Another thing that I think separates Russell from the rest of the pack is his confidence level. In a recent interview with Touchdown Alabama, Russell mentioned that he was going to win the starting position at any means. That is essential in coming in as a true freshman and having a heightened opportunity to win the quarterback competition.
After watching Russell go through individual drills, team drills, and pass scale in particular at the Under Armour All-America practices, he seemed to be the most polished quarterback. While Ty Simpson is likely the frontrunner to win the competition, I believe Russell has a great chance of winning the job and taking the ‘bull by the horns’, so to speak.
My assessment on Russell is that he throws a great deep ball, plays at a high level on a consistent basis, and can use his legs occasionally if need be. Also, he does a good job of distributing the football and working through his progressions. With Russell having played at Class 6A in Texas, he knows what it is like to play against the best competition. That should certainly help him when he starts spring practices with the Crimson Tide.
Russell will push Simpson regardless if he is named the starter or not. He is poised to be Alabama’s starting quarterback, and the time could come sooner that some might expect.
