Alabama football’s head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about the Crimson Tide possibly playing against another team during the spring at his most recent press conference.
Deion Sanders introduced the idea when he said he would like to actually play a game in the spring.
“The Spring Game will be televised on ESPN2,” Sanders said. “We got to sell this thing out and pack this thing because the way the trend is going, you never know if this is going to be the last spring game. I don’t believe in that. I don’t really want to condone that. I would like to play in the spring. Actually, I (would) like to play against another team in the spring. That’s what I’m trying to do right now. ”
DeBoer was asked his thoughts on Sanders’ idea on Thursday.
“I guess it might be a little easier when you just worry about one side of the ball at that time,” DeBoer said. “But to me, if we were concerned about the reps amongst ourselves at this point, like this year, I definitely wouldn’t be wanting to have that type of scrimmage. I think every program can do what they want to do. It’s about us making ourselves better. I think there are some things, like when the NFL has their times during fall camp, they might go specifically to a team that gives them certain fronts and coverages or a certain style of offense that they maybe won’t see much from their own team during their preparation at fall camp or OTAs or whatever it might be. So. there’s benefits to that…The answer I gave you right now might not be the same answer I give you down the road as we develop, but I think we’re still recovering from a little bit, all these injuries that have happened, a lot was from last season for the most part..”
Alabama football still plans to host its A-Day event, but it will not include a scrimmage. It will essentially just be a practice.
