Alabama football’s quarterback room made history on Saturday evening in the Crimson Tide’s 73-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Saban-Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Ty Simpson, Keelon Russell and Austin Mack combined to throw for six touchdowns in the win. This outing marked the first time three Alabama quarterbacks threw multiple touchdowns in one game.
The Tide maximized the opportunity to showcase Simpson, Mack and Russell against ULM’s defense as Alabama dominated the Warhawks on all fronts from start to finish. This dominance started out with Ty Simpson, who accumulated a 269.9 percent passer rating after going a perfect 17 for 17 through the air for 226 yards and two touchdowns in two quarters of play. Simpson’s performance also set a program record for consecutive completions to start a game.
Shortly after, Simpson was relieved by Mack as the Tide went up multiple scores before halftime. Mack went on to play a drive in the second quarter and played the entire third quarter as he quickly found success of his own, completing 8-of-10 passes for 80 yards, along with two passing touchdowns. This small sample size earned Mack a quarterback rating of 213.2 percent. Lastly, Russell took his first collegiate snaps in relief for Mack and didn’t skip a beat when entering the game at the start of the fourth quarter. The true freshman quickly impressed, connecting on 4-of-6 passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
“It makes me smile,” Simpson said. “I’m super proud of those guys man. I feel like as a quarterback room we’re the closest group on the team, because for one, we’re such a special position because only one of us can play. And for two, just how we are as a good. Those guys worked extremely hard all week and they help me out understanding stuff. And the fact that they got to go out here today and show everybody what they’re capable of and help us score points, it makes me so happy. I feel like a big brother seeing Austin and Keelon work. These guys are extremely great players and the future of this program.”
Simpson, Mack, and Russell all look to continue sharpening each other’s iron in practice.
