Alabama DB who plays bigger than size is becoming a defensive playmaker

Alabama football’s starting husky defensive back Red Morgan may be listed at 6-foot and 190 pounds, but he plays much bigger, and the impact he is having as of late is just as big.

The Alabama native is fresh off back-to-back weeks with an interception.

Morgan’s latest interception was taken back for six points. He has been a consistent member of the Crimson Tide’s defense since coming on campus. The defensive back played in 12 games on defense and on special teams as a freshman in 2024. He followed up the 2024 season with five starts while playing in all 15 of the Tide’s games last season.

“He’s played as a freshman since he started here,” Alabama veteran safety Bray Hubbard said. “He’s grown a lot as a player, person. He’s a great player, plays fast.”

Morgan is making his presence felt all over the field  this season. He has racked up 18 total tackles, two interceptions and 1.5 tackles for loss through four games. This performance is coming off a spring, where Morgan described himself as a hard-nosed football player, despite his size.

“I don’t too much get into all that,” Morgan said during the spring. “Being a little smaller, you just got to have a different mindset of things, approach things different. I don’t let things like that get to me. I just go out there and play my game… I’m a hard-nose, physical player. Put me anywhere on the field, I can do whatever.”

Morgan’s teammates know what to expect from Morgan every game. They know he is willing to go as far as putting his body on the line to get the job done.

“Red throws all his body weight into a tackle,” Hubbard said. “Whether that’s at your ankle, at your head. You never know where he is going to come at you. He’s throwing it all in the line, so.”

Morgan will look to continue his string of impressive performances against Mississippi State this weekend.
