According to Adam Schefter, the Oakland Raiders have released back-up quarterback AJ McCarron after one season.
The two-time national champion originally signed a two year $10 million deal with the Buffalo Bills at the start of the 2018-19 season before being traded to Oakland. He appeared in just two games in this time in California and attempted just three passes.
McCarron was set to earn a $1.9 million base salary that would become fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2019 league year. The Raiders originally did not want to release McCarron due to his usefulness in the quarterback’s room, but the team still needed the cap space for other areas of need.
Before arriving in Buffalo, McCarron had built a reputation of being a very reliable back-up with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2015 McCarron filled in when Andy Dalton suffered a season-ending injury and would have lead the Bengals to their first playoff win in 27 years if not for a late pass interference penalty.
Head coach Jon Gruden will now likely look to the NFL draft to find a suitable back-up for Derek Carr
