Alabama Makes the Top Four in First Playoff Rankings

By: Larry Burton

Shocking? Most folks will say yes, but Alabama has made the all important top four list in the College Football Playoff rankings just out Tuesday night.

If you’re a fan of undefeated Michigan State, Baylor or TCU, shocked might not be the best adjective you would use. There are other undefeated teams too that would beg to differ.

The committee placed the one loss Crimson Tide ahead of those and all the other one loss teams based primarily on two factors, the body of work to date and the fact that they believe that in a head to head contest, Alabama would simply be better.

The rankings are:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS, WEEK 10 (first official week)

Team     Wins – Losses

1. Clemson – 8-0
2. LSU – 7-0
3. Ohio State – 8-0
4. Alabama – 7-1

5. Notre Dame – 7-1
6. Baylor – 7-0

7. Michigan State – 8-0
8. TCU – 8-0
9. Iowa -8-0
10. Florida – 7-1
11. Stanford -7-1
12. Utah -7-1
13. Memphis -8-0
14. Oklahoma State -8-0
15. Oklahoma – 7-1
16. Florida State – 7-1
17. Michigan -6-2
18. Ole Miss – 7-2
19. Texas A&M – 6-2
20. Mississippi State – 6-2
21. Northwestern – 6-2
22. Temple – 7-1
23. UCLA – 6-2
24. Toledo – 7-0
25. Houston – 8-0

However, this week’s rankings mean little as things will usually work themselves out on the field. Neither Alabama nor LSU will be in the top four should they lose this weekend and others still have tough games themselves to play.

Still, it’s interesting to see how the committee feels about the top teams at this stage and it’s sure to have the media tongues wagging and typing this week.
