Georgia names Kirby Smart at head coach

Georgia has officially locked up Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart as its next head coach.

The program released the numbers concerning Smart’s contract Sunday, after Alabama defeated Florida 29-15 in the Southeastern Conference title game. He is set to make $3.75 million a year for six seasons. Smart’s deal falls just short of what Georgia was offering former head coach Mark Richt for his extension ($4.1 million), prior to him not being retained. 

Smart will be introduced as the Bulldogs’ head coach during Monday’s press conference in Athens, Ga., per Jeff Schultz of AJC.com (Dawg Nation). Bonuses are included in the contract.

Performances bonuses in Smart’s contract

  • $400,000 (SEC Champion) or $150,000 (SEC East Champion)….Does not get both
  • $1 million (wins national title), $600,000 (playing in title game), $500,000 (advancing to semifinal game)
  • $200,000 for a top-5 finish in either AP or Coaches’ poll
  • $200,000 for playing in any New Year’s Six Bowl (College Football Playoff Bowls, though not playoff)
  • $100,000 making the Citrus Bowl
  • $75,000 playing in one of the lower Six-Pack bowl games (Taxslayer, Outback, Belk, Music City, Texas or Liberty)
  • $50,000 playing in the Birmingham or Independence Bowl
