Coach Gus Malzahn may not have much to complement Auburn’s play at quarterback, as it’s gone from possibly having four running backs on the roster to one. Its depth in the backfield took a major hit on Wednesday, when Malzahn dismissed running back Jovon Robinson from the team.
AL.com was first to report the news, after it broke during the Tigers first day of fall practice.
Robinson, a former junior college star (Georgia Military College), totaled 639 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 117 carries in eight games. The 6-foot, 219-pound back led Auburn in rushing against Alabama in 2015, amassing 51 yards on 14 carries despite a 29-13 loss at home.
The Tigers lost Peyton Barber to the National Football League and Roc Thomas to a transfer, prior to what happened Wednesday. With Robinson gone, it leaves sophomore Kerryon Johnson to carry the load. Johnson finished last season with 52 carries for 208 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
