Let’s be honest folks: It looks like Lamar Jackson is running away with the Heisman … for now.
The Louisville Cardinals’ star QB has been playing spectacular all season, but his team still has two losses. On the season, Jackson has completed 204 of his 357 passing attempts, for 3,109 yards and 28 touchdowns (6 INTs). He’s rushed for 1,367 yards, and 19 touchdowns. He is a very deserving candidate for college football’s best award.
But what about Alabama freshman QB Jalen Hurts? His name has made it in the mix, and rightfully so. The true freshman has delivered this season. He hasn’t put up numbers like Jackson’s, but he also hasn’t played as weak of a schedule (sorry ACC fans). Hurts has won in two tough environments -Baton Rouge and Oxford- and has led his team to an undefeated record. He’s been a dominant rusher, showing that he is a true dual-threat quarterback. Compared to other true freshman QBs, he’s off the charts.
What would it take for Hurts to head to New York and come home with some hardware? Well, maybe a massive Iron Bowl performance, as well as a stellar SEC Championship game performance. It’s not impossible for Hurts. He’s proved his worth in big games, and the next two game could be his ticket to the Heisman. His real goal is to win a national championship, but make no mistake about it; Hurts is a household name who has a fair shot at being Alabama’s third Heisman winner.
