More information has surfaced on Da’Shawn Hand.
The University of Alabama defensive lineman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence over the weekend (Saturday), and would be released on $1,000 bond. Since the incident and a statement from Alabama football head coach Nick Saban, Tuscaloosa News reports that Hand was not driving at the time of the arrest.
Per the article, the arresting officer located Hand asleep in a parked car at 4:30 a.m. at the 1100 block of University Blvd. According to a report from Touchdown Alabama Magazine, the senior posted a Snapchat video of him drinking on the downtown strip at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, before getting into the front seat of a car.
Despite the car being parked, Hand had the keys in the ignition and the headlights on – which led Tuscaloosa police department into thinking he was driving. A pre-trial hearing has been set for Sept. 18 at Tuscaloosa Municipal Court.
Depending on how the court rules will determine Hand’s punishment moving forward. Going back to Saban’s statement on last week, he called Hand’s action “unacceptable” and mentioned his disappointment.
Prior to this incident, Hand was pegged to take over leadership duties on the defensive front with Jonathan Allen and Dalvin Tomlinson in the National Football League. He’s been twice named to the SEC’s Academic Honor Roll and serves on the Student-Athlete advisory committee at Alabama.
