Mario Cristobal, Oregon Ducks hire long-time UA assistant on its coaching staff

Mark J. Rebilas - USA TODAY Sports

Bobby Williams is leaving Tuscaloosa, Ala.

After being a part of a 10-year dominant run with Nick Saban at the University of Alabama, Williams is headed to the University of Oregon to join head coach and former Crimson Tide offensive assistant, Mario Cristobal – according to a report from OregonLive on Thursday.

Williams becomes the latest coaching turnover on an Alabama staff that is coming off its fifth national championship under Saban and second of the College Football Playoff era. He joins Jeremy Pruitt, Brian Daboll and Derrick Ansley to venture off and embrace a new endeavor.

Following Saban’s departure from Michigan State University to Louisiana State University in November of 1999, Williams took over as head coach of the Spartans. He would last only two full seasons as the program fired Williams in 2002 on the heels of a 3-6 record (16-17 overall).

He was with Saban at MSU, LSU and Miami Dolphins (NFL), before joining him at Alabama in 2008 as the tight ends and special teams coach. Williams was a part of five Southeastern Conference championships and five national championships during his time in Tuscaloosa.

The 59-year-old will serve as special teams coach at Oregon.
