The two buddies from Alabama’s 2019 spring game are at it again.
With the hype train surrounding Bryce Young at quarterback, Mac Jones and John Metchie III were going over route concepts this week in Florida. Metchie, a native of Brampton, Canada, was the MVP of the A-Day matchup – totaling 133 yards receiving on five catches with three receptions off Jones.
He skied through the air for a 49-yard reception and immediately had Crimson Tide fans interested about his growth in the program.
The 6-foot, 195-pounder arrived in Alabama’s 2019 signing class as a four-star receiver and carries a body structure that resembles Calvin Ridley.
Metchie attended both St. James School (Maryland) and The Peddie School (New Jersey); however, much of his production came at St. James. Throughout his career, he totaled more than 1,300 rushing yards, 2,500 receiving yards and had 42 touchdowns. Metchie, like former Tide running back Josh Jacobs, was a late bloomer in the recruiting cycle.
Alabama fans saw what Jacobs became and it hopes the same for Metchie. With both Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III in the National Football League, the Tide is looking for a No. 3 option behind DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle.
Metchie can be the target as teammates refer to him as an ‘explosive playmaker.’

He has formed a bond with Smith and Waddle and after starting something with Metchie, Jones is back to work with the talented Canadian.
The redshirt junior is going to make is difficult on Young to upstage him, but that is the beauty of college football. Jones anticipates guiding Alabama to the College Football Playoff and its 18th national championship in school history.
