Tua Tagovailoa’s agent nets fellow QB Patrick Mahomes half billion historic contract

Marvin Gentry - USA TODAY Sports

An earthquake shook the National Football League on Monday in the form of a contract.

At 24 years old, Patrick Mahomes II of the Kansas City Chiefs became the first half billion-dollar player in sports history.

After becoming the third African American quarterback to win a Super Bowl and the second-youngest to do so (Ben Roethlisberger), the Chiefs and Leigh Steinberg – Mahomes’ agent – decided to make him a member of the franchise for life.

The native Texan signed a 10-year extension worth $503 million, which includes $477 million in guarantee mechanisms.

Steinberg is also representing former Alabama signal caller, Tua Tagovailoa.

Once a five-star prospect from Hawaii, Tagovailoa rescued the Crimson Tide to a national championship in the 2017 season and led the program to a Southeastern Conference title as a sophomore in 2018. He set multiple school records including most touchdown passes (87) and most scores responsible for (96).

Tagovailoa received a few individual accolades in his career and was named a permanent team captain, following the conclusion of the 2019 season.

He was taken No. 5 overall by the Miami Dolphins in this year’s NFL Draft, and the franchise believes it has the left-handed Dan Marino in Tagovailoa. Mahomes was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in his second season (2018) and a Super Bowl champion last year.

Should Tagovailoa have this type of success, will Steinberg have two half billion deal clients?

We shall see, but it is something to think about for the rookie.
