Former Alabama quarterback and radio show host Jay Barker was arrested Saturday morning in Nashville and charged with assault after he allegedly tried to hit his wife, country music singer, Sara Evans with his car.
According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office’s database, Barker was arrested at 4:10 a.m. CT and was booked at 4:52 a.m. The 49-year-old was then placed under a 12-hour domestic violence hold with a $10,000 bond. Barker was later released at 7:29 p.m. after posting bond and currently has a court date set for March 22 at 8:30 a.m.
According to CBS 42, an affidavit of Barker’s arrest stated that the police arrived at a home on Norwood Drive in Nashville at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. Evans had allegedly left a neighbor’s party where she got in the passenger seat of a friend’s car and as they were passing the driveway, Evans reportedly saw Barker reversing at a high speed attempting to hit them. Barker initially left the scene but later returned when police arrived where he was arrested by the Nashville Police Department.
According to the affidavit, Barker and Evans are currently separated after being married in 2008.
Barker played at Alabama under head coach Gene Stallings from 1991-94 and served as the quarterback during the 1992 national championship season. In his final season with the Crimson Tide in 1994, Barker won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
Following his college career, Barker was drafted in the fifth round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers but was unable to make the roster. Barker would later join the New England Patriots in 1995, and then the Carolina Panthers in 1996 but never appeared in a game. He would then go on to play in the Canadian Football League from 1998 to 2001 with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2001, Barker returned to Alabama to finish his football career playing for the Birmingham Thunderbolts in the XFL.
The Trussville native currently hosts “The Jay Barker Show” for Tuscaloosa radio station Tide 100.9. Barker is the father of Alabama walk-on quarterback Braxton Barker who entered the NCAA transfer portal this past week.
