Spring football returned to the University of Alabama on Friday, March 11.
Fans of the Crimson Tide are excited for this edition of athletes taking the field, as Nick Saban and the program look to reclaim the crown of national champions. With 15 practice sessions – including the A-Day Game – the staff writers for Touchdown Alabama Magazine will provide in-depth previews on marquee players.
We move to the ninth marquee player on Alabama’s defense to profile, and it’s defensive lineman Jamil Burroughs.
Jamil Burroughs
-Classification: Junior
–Position: Defensive Lineman (nose tackle)
-Hometown: Powder Springs, Ga.
-Height: 6-3
-Weight: 309 pounds
–Strengths: Size, power, quickness, explosion off the ball, run stopper
–Weaknesses: Needs more reps, needs more playing experience
Summary for spring practice
Jamil Burroughs joins Tim Smith as a defensive lineman that should have been used more for Alabama in 2021.
He was limited to three games, totaling two tackles, a tackle for loss, and a sack. Burroughs worked into six games in 2020, recording five total tackles as a freshman. The 6-foot-3, 309-pounder carries the size, power, quickness, explosiveness (as an interior rusher), and run-stopping abilities to be successful. He needs more reps and more playing time on the field.
Burroughs arrived in the Crimson Tide’s 2020 class as a four-star from McEachern High School. He was one of the elite defensive tackle prospects in the cycle. Burroughs collected 62 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, six sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2017.
Alabama has a deep rotation on its line, but Burroughs needs more burn.
The best defensive teams in the Nick Saban era are those that consistently rotated players upfront. Burroughs can be an impact player, but the Tide needs to create more opportunities for him. He looks to separate himself as the next man up throughout spring practice.
