Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron gave back to the community as he treated 15 local children to a shopping spree at Academy Sports in Mobile. Each child, who was chosen from those registered for McCarron’s annual football camp, was handed $150 gift cards to the athletics store.

This is the second time McCarron has treated the local youth to a shopping frenzy as he started the tradition this time last year ahead of his camp.

“We have to thank Academy for teaming up with us for the second year to allow this opportunity for the kids,” McCarron said per AL.com, “for people in our community to come over here and have a little shopping spree, especially during the times we live in with the way the economy is and everything else. It’s unbelievable, and I can’t thank them enough to be able to put this on for the kids in our community. Something we’re very proud to do.”

McCarron’s youth camp takes place this Saturday, July 9 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mobile Christian School. The former Alabama quarterback shared his excitement over the high turnout the camp is likely to have this weekend.

“It’s awesome being able to full up 600 spots in less than two hours and then have 250 kids on standby that are probably going to be walkups,” McCarron said. “It’s definitely a blessing. It’s going to be fun seeing kids back out playing again and being kids. Being outside and actually having some fun with football, learning the game, learning different positions, so we’re blessed and very humbled to be a part of this and put this camp on for the seventh year.”

McCarron is currently an NFL free agent and is coming off a torn ACL which he suffered during a preseason game while playing for the Atlanta Falcons. He was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals where he played the first four seasons of his career. McCarron has also spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans.
