5-Star recruits James Smith & Qua Russaw explain decisions to sign with Alabama

James Smith and Qua Russaw stamped Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class as one of Nick Saban’s best on paper by signing with the Crimson Tide Wednesday.

Both Smith and Russaw let it be known they were a package deal months ago. Both had Alabama, Alabama State, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State in their final six. They went through the entire recruiting process together and both decided Alabama football was the best place for them.

Smith said he thought about multiple factors when contemplating his decision, including the opportunity to play early.

“I was just thinking about myself, situation to go to the NFL and just a dynasty and winning. Then I (can) come in work hard, play as a freshman and stuff like that,” Smith said to media members after signing.

Russaw said he feels Alabama gives him an opportunity to be great.

“It was getting towards the end, the in-home visit with coach went well and Alabama, winning tradition, a chance to be great,” said Russaw.

Both recruits have the talent to make an immediate impact in Tuscaloosa, and they are ready to compete.

“I love competition. I am ready to go out there and compete,” said Russaw. “I have the best relationship with coach Kelly. I know he is gone. He told me, no matter if he leaves or not, he thinks this is a great spot for me me. and Alabama is going to take care of me.”
