He wants a Super Bowl Championship more than a contract, but the numbers behind Jalen Hurts’ historic contract extension are incredible.
More intriguing details came Tuesday morning from NFL Senior Reporter Albert Breer of the Monday Morning Quarterback.

Breer broke down Hurts’ five-year, $255 million extension. He gets $110 million fully guaranteed, $23.294 million to sign the contract, and his base salary grows yearly from 2023 to 2028. Hurts will make $51 million in 2027 and 2028.

Breer highlights other numbers in Hurts’ contract, but the theme is how the Eagles are showing faith in its former second-round selection of the 2020 NFL Draft. Hurts showed he could take the franchise to the Super Bowl and nearly won a championship.
… In 2027, the Eagles can either pay $5M in an option bonus with a $46M base OR $49.655M in an option bonus with a $1.345M base. In 2028, it’s either a $10M option bonus with a $41M base, or $49.6M option bonus with a $1.4M base.
The guarantees are interesting too. 👇

Just $3.696M of Hurts’ 2026 money is fully guaranteed now. But another $12.8M becomes fully guaranteed next March, and $18M on top of that vests in March ’25. So he’s getting that money. Also, $22M of his 2027 money becomes fully guaranteed in March ’26.
As for the cap. 👇
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) April 25, 2023
Eagles are paying Hurts $157.304M for the next 4 years, but his cap numbers over that time are $5.7M, $13.7M, $22.4M and $33.0M. That leaves $83M in cash to be accounted for on the cap in ’27, ’28 and ’29. If they cut Hurts after ’26, $49.8M in dead money hits their cap.

The Eagles could easily near the end of Hurts’ deal with over $100M in cap charges to account for. That can be managed if Hurts is extended again, which underscores how this deal shows a lot faith in Hurts.
My conclusion: VERY aggressive structure, and a strong deal for the QB.

He is hungry for the future, and Eagles fans are excited about it.
