Alabama football defeated Louisiana Monroe in its home opener.
Here are some initial takeaways from the win:
– The Alabama defense can be as good as they were advertised before the season, but it must show up and play together like it did tonight with great effort and physicality. The Louisiana-Monroe offense is not considered explosive by any stretch of the imagination. But the way Alabama played on defense would have been good enough against a long list of teams. They must build confidence from this performance.
– Germie Bernard is wide receiver 1 in Tuscaloosa after two games. This is something not many would have predicted before the season started. The Washington transfer stood out against Florida State and capitalized on his performance with a strong one against Louisiana Monroe.
– The penalty woes flashed themselves in this one at times. It wiped points off the board. This is not a big deal when your playing lesser competition, but Alabama football knows all to well what this would mean if the Tide was playing stronger competition.
– Austin Mack looks to be QB2 in Tuscaloosa behind Ty Simpson for the moment. Keelon Russell and Mack did flash in this one in limited action, which is why the quarterback two position may officially remain vacant for the foreseeable future.
– Ty Simpson knows how to protect the football. Simpson did a good job of keeping the football out of harms way against Florida State. He did so against Louisiana-Monroe as well en route to completing 17 of his 17 pass attempts for 226 yards and three touchdowns.
– The future at Alabama remains bright with several young players getting to play today.
