As Alabama had a bit of a sluggish offensive performance on Saturday, still struggling to establish an efficient ground game, the Tide’s defense was stifling against LSU all night, holding the Tigers to just nine points on three field goals.
Part of what led to the Tide’s defensive success was its ability to create plays when it really needed to, like forcing a field goal after the Tigers had forced a turnover, gotten the ball with good field position, and driven inside the 10-yard line.
On top of that, the defense was able to force three fumbles, with the defense recovering two of them. It perfectly demonstrated the defense’s ability to make high-impact plays when they are needed, as it effectively sealed Alabama’s win when defensive end Yhonzae Pierre strip-sacked LSU’s Michael Van Buren with three minutes left in the game.
After the game, head coach Kalen DeBoer gave his take on the defense’s performance.
“I feel like they’ve been playing pretty solid,” DeBoer said. “I feel like they keep getting better. I feel like last week, I think there were some things; we gave up an explosive on one play, and I thought we were stingy at times. They got a short field last week, two weeks ago, I guess, against South Carolina. But I think there is a mindset that they have, I think there’s a mindset that’s built on trust. Guys are doing their job, there’s less of the explosive plays where one guy makes a mistake, doesn’t fit a gap, we’re seeing less and less of that. Just doing your job, understanding how to play certain blocks, knowing where your help is at, leveraging and then guys getting to the ball. They have a mindset right now where if they hustle, they’ll end up creating breaks. We just missed a couple of opportunities with the ball on the ground or the ball getting tipped in the air. We’ll keep making those plays, and they’re timely, at the end of the game and early in the game, to give us a little cushion there at the beginning. So, again, I like the way that they play, I like their mindset, and I’m confident they’ll go back to work again tomorrow.”
With the offense struggling at times, specifically with creating an efficient run game, it’s been good to see the Tide’s defense stay steady and play consistently good defense throughout the season, providing a solid backbone for the Crimson Tide.
Alabama will look for its defense to continue with a trend of consistency and hold strong next week, as the Tide will face the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners, who will be coming off a bye week, on Saturday afternoon in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
