After Alabama’s commanding 56-0 victory over Eastern Illinois, perhaps the biggest storylines in the SEC grew even more as another Conor Talty kick did not go through the uprights.
The fans in Bryant-Denny Stadium expressed their displeasure by booing Talty as he made his way to the sideline, something that disappointed head coach Kalen DeBoer. This turned into Talty getting booed before making his extra points, and when other kicks came onto the field to kick, a decent number of Alabama fans erupted like a touchdown was scored.
This led to DeBoer saying he wished the fans had Talty’s back like he knew the players did, and on Monday, DeBoer elaborated on how Alabama players are reacting to Talty’s missed field goals.
“When I say our guys got his back, I’ve seen players, I’ve seen myself have the right reaction to things that happen that you don’t like on the field, off the field, whatever it might be, things we want back,” DeBoer said. “Once it’s done, all you can do is communicate, talk to the people that it affected and continue to move on.”
Perhaps the reason fans booed Talty is because of the way he reacted after the missed 26-yard field goal against Oklahoma. He was seen yelling at the long snapper because of a high snap, but the snap was handled well by the holder and placed in front of Talty in time for him to have a real chance at making the kick.
That led to more backlash from fans than perhaps any Alabama kicker has gotten in the last 10 years, and the anger carried over from the Oklahoma loss to the Eastern Illinois game.
DeBoer shared what his mindset is when it comes to the mistakes, expressing the sentiment that everyone is human and that all that matters is writing the wrong and moving on.
“I think the biggest thing was probably just everyone in general, you’re human, right?” DeBoer said. “And so, people are going to make mistakes. I make mistakes. We all make mistakes, and then it’s the response and the things that he did. Well, he made it right with his teammates. He talked to them, and that’s what we can do. We move on. We write the wrongs, and now we just focus on what we can do, and that’s go be your best. That’s what he does in practice.”
Talty had made 11 of his 18 field goals this season, and he’s been perfect on extra points. His last two misses have been from under 30 yards.
DeBoer stated that Talty did well in practices leading up to last week’s game against Eastern Illinois, and he reassures that Talty loves this team and will give everything he’s got in the next game.
“He had a great week of practice last week,” DeBoer said. “I mean, he’s still hitting the ball well, and just gonna keep working. We’re gonna need him throughout the rest of the year, and I know he’s gonna give everything. He cares about this team a lot.”
Alabama will face Auburn in Jordan-Hare Stadium, and when looking at how the last few Iron Bowl meetings have gone at Auburn, a field goal might be the deciding factor if that stadium magic still exists.
