The Big Ten is circulating a document that details what a 24-team College Football Playoff format would look like, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The format would eliminate conference championships and an additional weekend of games on college football campuses. The SEC and Big Ten have had discussions about expanding the playoff, and it has been reported both conferences were willing to expand to 16 teams, but the Big Ten was only willing to expand to 16 teams if there was an agreement the playoff would eventually grow to 24 teams.
Alabama leads all teams in College Football Playoff appearances with nine. Clemson and Ohio State are tied behind Alabama with seven appearances each.
Thamel wrote sources have told ESPN the 24-team playoff document has been distributed to the Big Ten’s athletic directors and a working group of head coaches.
