One of the cornerstones of Alabama football in the early 2000s is getting his flowers.

Roman Harper was one of the most instinctive, yet hardest hitting safeties of his time for the Crimson Tide from 2002-05.

Dan Orlovsky tells why gap between Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson is not big

He played mostly for Mike Shula, totaling 302 career tackles, 3.5 sacks, five interceptions, five forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries. The Prattville (Ala.) native was a pivotal part of a dominant Tide defense in 2005 that propelled the team to 10 wins, before NCAA sanctions came in. Harper was a productive college player, but he made his name more in the National Football League. He was a second-round selection in the 2006 NFL Draft to the New Orleans Saints and played 11 seasons – including nine in New Orleans.

His playing career featured two Pro Bowl nods (2009, 2010) and a Super Bowl Championship in the 2009 season. Harper’s professional run ended with a stats sheet of 819 tackles, 18 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 67 passes defended, and 11 interceptions.

He took part in the Reese’s Senior Bowl before hearing his name in the draft.

Harper’s moment in the Senior Bowl propelled him to have a memorable pro career, and now he’s one of the most prolific names rising in sports media. His time spent in the rite of passage exhibition game went a long way into the special honor he has received.

Panini, the new sponsor of the Senior Bowl, named Harper as one of the inductees to the Hall of Fame for the 2026 class. He is in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame, but this induction means more.

Anytime I get inducted into a Hall of Fame, it is an honor and a blessing, and this is one I did not see coming,” Harper said.

“When I played in this game, I was the angriest I have ever been in my life, and to look back and be enshrined in this game really gives me clarity knowing how far I’ve come, and how much I’ve grown as a man and as a person. I am going to cherish this moment, where I can celebrate a time when I was not in a good place mentally, but a time that propelled me into who I am today. That is life, and I am so excited to share this with my family and the people I’ve met in the Senior Bowl along the way. They have poured so much into me, and I am honored to be a part of this family.”

Former All-American LB is returning to Tuscaloosa in April to assist Kalen DeBoer

He poured everything into his high school career, collegiate career, NFL career, and now in his broadcasting career.

Harper is a three-time Hall of Famer and continues to be great.
