Alabama fans heard some exciting things from Kalen DeBoer after Friday’s scrimmage in spring practice, but it also heard something that leaves it in frustration.
The quarterbacks and wide receivers looked good, yet the Crimson Tide remains a working progress in the run game.
Kalen DeBoer gives update on where Alabama’s offensive line stands after first scrimmage
Coach DeBoer loves the versatility he has on the offensive line; however, he highlighted a critical area for a transfer that needs to improve. He singled out Mississippi State transfer, Jayvin James, in his presser following the first scrimmage.
James, a native of Deerfield Beach, Fla., is in his fourth college football season.
His career started at Akron (2023-24) as a former three-star, but James gained headlines for exceptional pass protection last year at Mississippi State. The 6-foot-5, 318-pounder played 12 games for the Bulldogs – including nine starts at left tackle – allowing three sacks in 856 snaps. James tape is impressive in pass protection, but there is an area he needs to be better in.
“This week was a good week for him,” DeBoer said of James. “Consistency. He is really solid in pass protection and getting better in the run game. He has to get used to our offensive style, but he has started to pick things up.”
Kalen DeBoer analyzes QB competition after Alabama’s first spring scrimmage
DeBoer wants consistency from James in every aspect.
“You don’t want the highs, lows, missed assignments that come out of nowhere, and the quarterback is caught in the backfield surprised with a guy in his face,” DeBoer said.
The transfer is starting to gain some consistency, but DeBoer desires more from James in his growth to become a dominant player.
