ON3’s college football insider Brett McMurphy reports that the majority of the SEC Athletic Directors polled by ON3 want more than 16 teams in the College Football Playoff.
Sankey and the SEC reportedly favor a 16-team College Football Playoff, while the other major conferences have expressed interest in a 24-team playoff format. The current format includes 12 teams, with four of them receiving a first-round BYE. According to McMurphy, there are athletic directors in the SEC who lean more towards the other conferences.
The SEC has not won a National Championship under the current format. The last time the SEC took home the college football National Championship was during the 2022-2023 season when Georgia captured the crown. The Big Ten has won the last three National Championships.
Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M are the SEC programs that have made the 12-team playoff.
