In years past competition for the starting quarterback role has leaked from fall camp into the early portions of the regular season. However, under the Kalen DeBoer era, the Crimson Tide are working around a bit different timelines.

Although one doesn’t seem to be set in stone just yet, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb gave a glimpse to the benchmarks that each will meet indicating that the team will likely need both scrimmages to decide.

“Just younger guys, making sure we have every ounce of data we need,” Grubb said to the media on Thursday. “But if it’s the first scrimmage, it’s the first scrimmage. If we feel good about that after that point, we’ll name that. Obviously the longer your team can have their starter named, the better off you are. We don’t worry about the other team and who they know it is or isn’t. We just want to make sure we make the right decision.”

Alabama’s first scrimmage of fall camp will take place next Thursday, Aug. 13 where Keelon Russell and Austin Mack will be able to prove themselves in a game setting for the first time since A-Day.
