Why transfer chose to play at Alabama over being starting center at 30 other schools

Racin Delgatty is feeling good as he transitions into SEC college football with Alabama after playing at D2 Cal Poly for multiple seasons.

“I’m with the best,” Delgatty told reporters. “It’s been truly a blessing.”

Delgatty played in 22 games during three seasons at Cal Poly, and he started in 11 games last season. Once he entered the portal and teams turned on his tape,  Delgatty said his recruitment went crazy.

“I had 30-plus offers out of the portal,” Delgatty said. “I mean, 30 schools wanted me to be their starting center. It was really amazing. Started off slow because what happens is all the big schools, they slowly go down to the FCS guys and then once they saw me, it was like a hidden gem, and everyone was going crazy.”

Alabama sold Delgatty on its program by getting him on campus.

“They just had to bring me out here and show me what it’s about,” said Delgatty. “Show me the trophy room. I mean, it’s Alabama.”

The California native is now expected to start at center for the Crimson Tide this season. Alabama’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb feels Delgatty’s size and athleticism makes him a great fit at center for the Tide.

“Racin is bigger than people think, he operates at over 300 pounds pretty consistently,” Grubb said. “I just always tell him he kind of looks like a retired surfer, he’s got a little bit of that going on. At first you’re kind of looking at him like ‘how big is this guy?’ but he’s got decent size. He’s super athletic though, and I think that’s the part we realized when we played, we realized he has the athleticism and the physicality to do this. Especially against our front, that kind of gives him the confidence and he knows he can do it.”
