Alabama defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. may find himself playing a handful of key roles in the Tide’s secondary this upcoming season.

Kirkpatrick is a talented junior who missed a large portion of the 2025 campaign due to a suspension. The defensive back is set to return during Alabama’s week one contest against ECU, and Kirkpatrick is expected to emerge as a key contributor in numerous ways moving forward.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack recently revealed Kirkpatrick’s potential role this season, as Wommack claims the junior could play multiple positions in the Crimson Tide’s secondary across 2026.

“There’s a lot of traits and skill sets that you would like to have because you got to be able to play man, got to be able to blitz off the edge, play variations of zone, fit the run game.” Wommack said. “And so Dre being a very instinctive football player, that kind of fits him. And it’s an opportunity to get him around the ball and blitz him off the edge as well. We feel like Dre can play the husky, can play the rover position. He’s been on this defense for three years, he can play the free safety. But I think you’ll see him a decent amount in both that rover and husky spot for us.”

Kirkpatrick recorded nine tackles, one TFL and one forced fumble through eight total appearances last season. The junior could quickly begin to thrive in the Tide’s husky role moving forward, but Kirkpatrick appears to be a prime candidate for the rover position as well following Wommack’s comments.
